OpenAI Just Started Training Your Competitors
The free program that landed July 21, and the 10-minute test that tells you if you're already behind
On July 21, OpenAI launched a free program called ChatGPT for Small Businesses: live training webinars, in-person AI academies across the US, and ready-made integrations with Shopify and Wix.
Read that again. The biggest AI company on the planet is now personally teaching small business owners how to use AI for marketing, accounting, and e-commerce. For free.
The tools you’ve been “meaning to look into since spring” are being hand-delivered to the shop across town. With a workshop. And snacks, probably.
Why It Matters Locally
For two years, the AI story was one-sided: your customers changed. 45% of consumers now use an AI assistant to find a local service, up from 6% a year ago. That alone rewired how people find plumbers, dentists, florists, and gyms.
Now the other side is changing too. Your competitors are getting trained.
Here’s what that looks like in practice. The HVAC company two towns over signs up for a free OpenAI webinar. Ninety minutes later they have a follow-up email sequence, a review request workflow, and a weekly content system that runs itself. They didn’t get smarter than you. They got a head start on the boring stuff, and the boring stuff compounds.
The comfortable excuse (”nobody in my industry is really using this yet”) had a good run. It ended on July 21.
And here’s the part that stings: none of that training tells them, or you, whether AI actually recommends your business when a customer asks. That’s a separate game. Most owners are losing it without knowing they’re playing.
One Action This Week
Run the 10-minute visibility test. Before you touch a single tool or sign up for anything, find out where you actually stand.
Open ChatGPT (the free version is fine) and ask it the three questions your customers actually ask. Not your industry’s jargon. Their words.
For each answer, write down three things: Did your business appear? Who did appear? What reasons did the AI give for its picks?
That last one is the gold. When ChatGPT says “highly rated with over 200 reviews” or “offers same-day service according to their website,” it’s telling you exactly what data earned the recommendation. That’s your to-do list, reverse-engineered.
Then, if you want the training too, sign up for OpenAI’s program. It’s free and it’s real. Just know that learning to use AI and getting recommended by AI are two different projects. Do the second one first.
One Example
Copy this test script and swap in your details:
Question 1: "Who is the best [your service] near [your town]?"
Question 2: "I need [the specific problem you solve, in plain words].
Who should I call in [your town]?"
Question 3: "What should I look for when choosing a [your service]
in [your area]?"
Scorecard for each answer:
[ ] Did my business appear? (Yes / No)
[ ] Who appeared instead?
[ ] What exact reasons did the AI give for its recommendations?
[ ] Which of those reasons could describe my business but currently don't?Screenshot your results. Date them. You’ll want the before-and-after later.
Your Next Step
If you ran the test and your business showed up in all three answers: fantastic, frame it. If it showed up in zero, you’re in the majority, and the majority is invisible.
The Firestarter Visibility Audit finds exactly why AI skips you: the missing data, the weak signals, the listings you didn’t know existed. Then it hands you the fix list in priority order. You bring the business. We’ll bring the receipts.
